Locate It: Elberton

Hugging the border between Georgia and South Carolina with Lake Richard B. Russell as the cushion, Elberton and Elbert County are defined by the lake life. Weekends on Lake Russell are events that have brought families together for years and that teenagers grow up to share with their own children.

Authorized for construction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1966, Lake Russell began filling in 1983 after construction of the dam on the Savannah River, reaching full pool in 1984. Since federal regulations prohibit private exclusive use of public lands surrounding the lake, the Lake Russell experience is likened to being similar to enjoying a remote Canadian lake while being surrounded by civilization. With its undeveloped shorelines, Lake Russell provides an outdoor experience beyond just fishing; visitors enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as the abundant wildlife.

The primary access point to the lake is Richard B. Russell State Park, which offers some of the state’s finest fishing and boating, along with campsites and cottages on or near the water’s edge, a swimming beach, a natural trail that follows the shoreline, a well-kept disc golf course and, for traditional golfers, the 18-hole Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course, so named because of the Paleo-Indian artifacts excavated near the park in 1980 before the lake began filling.

Another access point to Lake Russell is the Bobby Brown Park Outdoor Recreation Area which has its own campground, including yurt rentals, a disc golf course, picnic shelters, 3-D archery range, nearly two miles of hiking trails, pier fishing and a boat ramp.

If the archery range at Bobby Brown Park scratches an itch for targeting shooting, then perhaps consider purchasing membership in the Elbert County Gun Club (or make friends with someone who is already a member) to enjoy the ranges for not just archery, but also for sporting clays, skeet, trap, pistol and rifle.

And let’s not forget the two Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) in Elbert County, also located on the shores of Lake Russell. The Elbert County WMA has a boat ramp for lake access and offers hunting opportunities for deer, turkey and small game, as well as wildlife viewing opportunities. The Little Broad River WMA is where the river feeds into the lake, creating opportunities for both lake and river fishing, paddling, boating, hunting, and wildlife viewing. Camping is not allowed at either WMA.

Combine your outdoor adventure with a little history with a visit to the Nancy Hart Cabin. Nancy Hart was a patriot spy against the British during the American Resolution. The approximate site of her cabin is graced with a replica cabin using chimney stones from the original cabin.
