DO IT: Hiking - Lakeview Loop – Don Carter State Park

Lakeview Loop – Don Carter State Park - Don Carter State Park

Park in the gravel parking lot next to the playgrounds by the swimming beach for easy access to the Woodland and Lakeview Loop Trails. A figure-eight trail can be created by combining the two paved loops, which have no color blazes. The names of the trails are wonderful indicators of what to expect on each loop. With one offering a turn through the woods and the other sweeping near the lake shore, this hike is accessible to bikes, strollers, and wheelchairs.

From the trailhead, the Woodland Loop is to the left. Start this way for a quiet stroll or ride through the forest. The only step grade is marked by a sign. This North Georgia forest trek can be walked in 30 to 45 minutes.

If you would like to start with the Lakeview Loop, turn right at the trailhead. Taking around 20 to 30 minutes to walk, this paved loop offers great views of the lake. At the first junction – the beginning of the actual loop – turn left for an easier hike. For a little more difficulty, take a right. The one steep grade is marked by a sign, and there is a short spur that leads to a fishing pier and boat ramp.

Once you’ve returned to your starting point, you may decide to extend your hike or take a dip in Lake Lanier. If so, simply follow the paved connector trails across the street to the beach or to the Huckleberry Trail.
