DO IT: Camping

Discover Georgia Outdoors: The Campfire is Calling You

Georgia offers campers everything from tent, trailer and RV sites to cozy cabins to both
rustic and palatial lodges overlooking some of Georgia’s most stunning scenery.

Georgia makes outdoor living so much fun you’ll want to stay and play a little longer! Campsites, cottages and lodges for parties of all sizes and budgets are abundant throughout Georgia.

Thirty-two state parks offer cottages with one, two and three bedrooms, many with fully equipped kitchens. Ranging from homey to palatial, lodges are found at seven state parks. These offer great amenities, comfortable rooms, rustic to fine dining, and meeting facilities for practically any conference need. You’ll even find a ten-cottage eco-lodge on the outskirts of the Okefenokee Swamp, and a backcountry lodge in the mountains that is only accessible by a five-mile hiking trail.

Georgia state parks are not the only public camping option. Campsites all over the state are managed by entities such as the Army Corps of Engineers and Georgia Power. These sites are located around reservoirs used mainly for power generation, flood management and water storage. These reservoirs are available for all sorts of lake recreational activities: boating, water skiing, paddling, swimming and more. Additionally, some counties and cities operate campgrounds in their communities. For example, Gordon County operates Salacoa Creek Park with its 32 RV sites and 25 primitive camping sites. The City of Fitzgerald offers Paulk Park RV & Tent Campground which has 24 lakeside RV sites and 35 tent sites.

Consistent with its reputation, Georgia offers some of the finest private campgrounds and RV camping in the nation. Often near some of the state’s most beautiful points of interest, these RV campgrounds offer enviable combinations of facilities, amenities and access. The choices range from primitive sites perched above lofty overlooks to full-service RV sites serenaded by the sound of trickling mountain streams or ocean waves.

Among other places, you can enjoy luxury RV camping at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands or set up at River’s End Campground on Tybee Island, often referred to as Savannah’s beach. There is a reason why, year end and year out, RV campers rate our state one of the best camping destinations in North America.

Fancy Digs in the Woods and Fields

Have you ever heard of a yurt? Did you know you can camp in one in Georgia? And who hasn’t wanted to camp in a teepee at some time in their lives?

These opportunities and more await you in Georgia’s great outdoors. Six Georgia State Parks offer yurt camping in a round, permanently pitched tent that is already set up for you. Made of wood and canvas, these yurts generally feature a deck, picnic table and grill/fire ring outside. Inside you will find furniture to sleep six, electrical outlets, large windows and locking doors. At least one private inn in Georgia also offers yurts on the property.

As for teepee camping, North Georgia Canopy Tours™ offers teepees for “glamping” (glamorous camping). Each teepee has heat/AC, lighting, and electrical outlets for an all-out luxury camping experience. Georgia State Parks offers other unusual camping opportunities at specific parks: equestrian campsites, riverside tent platforms, treehouse camping, paddle-in sites, Adirondack shelters and more.
