DO IT: Geocaching

Find Geocache Treasure in Georgia

Geocaching is a fast-growing activity in Georgia. It gets people outdoors, it's suitable for all ages
and dispositions, it's great for families to do together, and it's like going on a treasure hunt.

What is geocaching? Geocaching involves using a handheld GPS device or phone app to locate hidden “caches.” Basically, you get the GPS coordinates to a location from Geocaching.com, then go find a container at that location. You sign the log and hide the container in the same location where you found it for others to find. Some caches hold trinkets and people are encouraged to take one and leave something of equal value.

In 2019, Georgia State Parks introduced the History Trail GeoTour which offers geocachers of all levels a chance to travel back in time to all 19 of the historic sites locations and earn an exclusive trackable coin upon completion. Journey across the Peach State and solve clues along the way Indiana Jones-style.

Only after answering all new questions about Georgia’s history will you be able to open the combination lock to each geocache, making this an ideal game for history buffs. Complete all History Trail caches to be eligible for a History Trail geocoin. Take a photo of your GeoTour Time Travel Ticket and email it (along with your name and address) to parksRfun@dnr.ga.gov. Georgia State Parks will mail you your own trackable History Trail Geo-Coin!

Note: A parking fee may be required for Georgia State Parks. Annual passes available, and passes may also be checked out from libraries across the state.
