DO IT: Hiking - Resaca Battlefield Historic Site – Red

Resaca Battlefield Historic Site – Red - Resaca Battlefield Historic Site

As the site of some of the heaviest fighting at the beginning of Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, the Resaca Battlefield Historic Site is a Heritage Preserve. The 483-acre park has more than 4 miles of walking trails and was designated to protect, conserve, and preserve the cultural, natural, and recreational resources of the property. This site is wonderful for history buffs and nature trail enthusiasts alike. The trails are also good for running and bird watching. Deer can be spotted in the early morning.

Less than an hour and a half drive from Atlanta – almost exclusively on I-75 N – the site is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with seasonal operating hours. From the beginning of April through the end of October, the historic site is open from 7 a.m. to 8p.m. Hours are shortened to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from the start of November to the end of March. Admission is free and hours are subject to change. In addition to free parking, visitors enjoy a picnic area with shelter and public restrooms.

Take the White Trail south to the Red Trail loop. Traffic is moderate, making the trail ideal for a serene stroll or a quiet run. Be aware that the path can become muddy.

Battlefield Wildlife Safety:

  • Be aware that poisonous copperhead snakes inhabit the Battlefield.
  • Do not approach or feed wildlife.
