Towpath Trail -

Originally used by mules pulling cargo boats, today the Towpath is Augusta Canal’s main recreational trail. The trail has a wide, flat, sand-clay surface with a few paved areas. The section from the headgates to the rest area is recycled asphalt. From there it is a dirt road made of sand and clay leading to Goodrich Street. It extends several miles along the top of the canal bank.
